Guwahati: A notorious coal mafia Abdul Ahad Choudhury was shot dead by police in an encounter on Sunday in Assam's Hailkandi district.

According to reports, the encounter took place at 1:30 AM in the Lakhinagar area in the said district after he allegedly fled from the police custody on Saturday afternoon.

He was a resident of the Karimganj district.

As per the Hailakandi's SP Gaurav Upadhyay, Ahad was apprehended from Asimganj in Karimganj district on Saturday by cops of Lala police station in Hailakandi district.

''He managed to escape from police custody when he was being taken to Lala civil hospital for medical checkup,'' Upadhyay was quoted as saying by media.

According to TOI, in 2020 CBI had filed a case to probe the alleged illegal coal trade from Meghalaya to Bangladesh via Barak Valley in South Assam, including the role of a suspect, Abdul Ahad Choudhury.
